Working for racial justice, equity and collective voice in Stockport

Stockport Race Equality Partnership (SREP) works alongside racially minoritised communities across Stockport, supporting residents to challenge inequality, influence decision-making and build a fairer future for everyone.

For more than three decades, SREP has provided advocacy, advice and community support while working to address the causes of racial injustice and exclusion. Today, the organisation continues to create trusted spaces where people's experiences can be heard, valued and acted upon.

Working with Humanity Project, SREP is exploring how People's Assemblies can help strengthen community voice, deepen participation and create new opportunities for collective dialogue around race, equity and belonging.

From advocacy and lived experience to collective influence

Stockport Race Equality Partnership works with a wide range of communities across the borough, including people from Black, Asian, Roma, Gypsy and Traveller backgrounds, as well as newer migrant communities.

For many years, the organisation has supported people experiencing racism, discrimination and barriers to participation, while helping ensure that lived experience informs local services, policy and public debate.

Building on this work, SREP is exploring how People’s Assemblies could create structured spaces for residents to come together, share experiences, identify shared priorities and contribute to conversations about the future of their communities. Assemblies offer an opportunity to move beyond individual experiences towards collective dialogue, shared understanding and community-led influence.

Since joining Humanity Project, SREP has been focusing on listening, relationship-building and community engagement, helping lay the foundations for future assemblies rooted in racial justice, inclusion and participation. Together, this work is creating new opportunities for residents to shape local priorities and strengthen collective voice across Stockport.
