Creating a home for participation, culture and civic life
Stretford Public Hall is a historic civic building and community hub at the heart of Stretford, Greater Manchester. Once at risk of being lost, the Hall has been reclaimed and reopened as a community-owned space for culture, learning and local connection.
Today, it is becoming a home for assembly culture, creating opportunities for residents to come together, discuss local priorities and play a greater part in shaping the future of their town.
By combining culture, community activity and democratic participation, Stretford Public Hall is helping to reimagine what a civic space can be in the 21st century.
Assembly culture in Stretford
A community-owned civic building becoming a home for assembly culture
Stretford Public Hall serves residents across Stretford and Trafford, providing a shared civic space for a diverse and growing community. The Hall brings together long-standing residents, newer arrivals, local artists, community groups and volunteers, creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to connect and participate in community life.
The Hall’s revival has been driven by a belief that civic spaces matter. More than simply a venue, it is a place where people can meet, learn, celebrate, organise and contribute to the future of their community. In an area experiencing regeneration alongside continuing inequality, accessible and inclusive public spaces play an important role in strengthening connection and belonging.
People’s Assemblies and deliberative events are a natural extension of this work. Originally designed as a place for public gathering and debate, the Hall is once again becoming a space where local people can come together to discuss shared challenges, shape local priorities and participate in civic life. In this way, Stretford Public Hall is becoming a home for assembly culture: connecting community, culture and democracy under one roof.
So far, Stretford Public Hall has been in a development and testing phase, combining cultural programming, community activity and early assembly-style events. Through partnerships with local organisations and engagement with hundreds of residents, the Hall has been exploring how assemblies can become part of its wider role as a community anchor.
This work is helping to lay the foundations for a more participatory civic culture in Stretford. By bringing together culture, community organising and democratic participation, Stretford Public Hall is exploring how shared civic spaces can support stronger local voice, connection and decision-making.
