Connecting community organising and democratic participation

Together Creating Communities (TCC) works with residents across Wrexham, particularly people with lived experience of poverty, inequality and exclusion from decision-making. Through more than three decades of community organising, TCC has helped local people build the relationships, confidence and leadership needed to act together on issues affecting their communities.

People’s Assemblies are being developed as part of this wider organising approach. Rather than replacing existing campaigns and community structures, assemblies provide a way to bring people together across different groups, experiences and neighbourhoods, helping to identify shared priorities and strengthen collective decision-making.

Over recent years, TCC has been laying the foundations for assembly-based work through listening activity, power-mapping, creative community sessions and facilitator development. This work is helping to build the local skills, relationships and confidence needed to sustain assemblies over the long term.

Assemblies are already being used to support community action on issues including poverty and youth mental health.

Young leaders have been trained to facilitate youth assemblies, creating opportunities for young people to identify priorities, develop solutions and influence decisions affecting their lives.

And in July 2026, the Wrexham Poverty Action Collaboration will bring together residents, organisations and decision-makers to reflect on lived experience, launch a community manifesto and shape local action on poverty.

This work reflects TCC’s belief that people are not simply recipients of services or subjects of consultation. They are active participants in shaping their communities and their future. By combining community organising with assemblies, TCC is helping to build a stronger culture of participation, accountability and community power across Wrexham.
